Activity cerebralSegĂșn a publication of the journal Stroke, research conducted at the Hospital del Mar de Barcelona established that cholesterol have beneficial effects on the brain, protecting the degeneration of the cerebral white matter.
Neurologists at the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona conducted a study in collaboration with the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston, which wanted to establish the impact of the presence of cholesterol and triglycerides on the degree of impairment cerebral white matter in patients with stroke or stroke.
Sample
* 1135 patients were studied, of which 504 belonged to the Hospital del Mar and the rest (631) at MGH. We measured the degree of impairment in these patients, to correlate with the presence or absence of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood.
Results in both medical centers
* Patients with high cholesterol had less degeneration of the brain’s white matter.
* It is important to the role of white matter. This takes care of sensitive communication between the brain and the rest of the body.
* With aging may appear white matter lesions in the brain and this combined with high blood pressure, can cause problems in gait disorder, depression, urinary incontinence, cognitive impairment, and so on.
* Sometimes older people can suffer from hypocholesterolemia or hipotrigliceridemia.
Conclusion
* Taking into account the results obtained and the role of white matter in the brain, it is important to infer that while the excess cholesterol and triglycerides carry cardiovascular problems, it must be remembered that these lipids are essential for normal functioning brain, especially in older people.
* The results of this research can be useful for treating diseases resulting from the aging and elderly.
