Contact lenses with vitamin E
While still in experimental stage, experimental, experts from the University of Florida, United States, have made special contact lenses with vitamin E to keep the drugs for glaucoma eye about 100 times longer than the other commercial contact lenses. Currently, the drops that relieve eye pressure are the main treatment for glaucoma.
However, after placing in the eye, tears eliminate the drug within a few minutes, so do not reach the cornea and the treatment is often ineffective. These U.S. scientists have developed a new method for extended release of drugs that includes vitamin E for contact lenses.
According to Anuj Chauhan, director of the study, the molecules of vitamin E slows the release of the drug from the eye lens, which keeps the medication in the eye longer than drops, achieving a more successful therapy. These new lenses could be applied to other eye disorders like cataracts and dry eye. They also help block UV radiation.
