A study published in The American Journal of Medicine and developed between the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona and the Foundation familial hypercholesterolemia, has concluded that hypercholesterolemia may promote the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. According to this study there would be a direct relationship between this disease and high cholesterol in blood.
Barcelona Hospital Clinic Foundation in conjunction with familial hypercholesterolemia conducted an investigation which established that 22% of patients suffering from hypercholesterolemia evaluated, some type of brain dysfunction.
Sample
* we evaluated 47 subjects with familial hypercholesterolemia and compared with a control group consisting of 70 persons. In both groups and he made 13 neurological tests for a period of 5 years.
Conclusions
* According to the results, we concluded that those who suffer from high levels of LDL or bad cholesterol, are ten times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s. This is due to settle that LDL cholesterol from being deposited amyloid plaques in the brain, which produce significant cognitive impairment, which would result in the onset of Alzheimer’s.
Such studies are very useful because they allow establishing guidelines for prevention, especially in patients with a family history of hypercholesterolemia.
